WT's Great Books to launch discussion series on Amarillo native Saunders
CANYON — West Texas A&M University's Great Books Series will launch a series of discussions in January on the works of Amarillo native George Saunders in advance of the author's upcoming lecture at the university.
Dr. Daniel Bloom, organizer of Great Books and associate professor of philosophy in WT's Department of English, Philosophy and Modern Languages, will lead the discussion of Saunders' “Unloading for Mrs. Schwartz” at 7 p.m. on January 9 via Zoom .
The discussion series — sponsored by the EPML department at the Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities — is open to those who have or have not read the story, Bloom said.
“This is Saunders’ first-ever work, which seems appropriate as we begin our preparations for his visit,” Bloom said.
Saunders, who was born in Amarillo and spent time as a master's student in WT's English program in the 1980s, will be the guest speaker at Amarillo College's Creative Mind conference on April 4, which will be co-presented by the WT Distinguished Lecture Series and the Center. for the study of the Garry L. Nall Lecture in Western Studies of the American West. The lecture will take place at 7 p.m. on April 4 in Legacy Hall in the Jack B. Kelley Student Center on WT's Canyon campus.
Saunders is the author of a novel, five collections of short stories, a novella, and a book of essays. His 2017 novel “Lincoln in the Bardo” won the Man Booker Prize. Recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant in 2006, his work appears regularly in the New Yorker, GQ and Harpers Magazine. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine in 2013.
Saunders' work is the focus of a WT seminar that will be taught this semester by Dr. Ryan Brooks, associate professor of English and co-director of graduate studies in English. Brooks will attend the January 9 Great Books meeting.

Upcoming Amarillo Symphony concerts this month
The Amarillo Symphony invites the community to join it for its first Amarillo chamber music concert of 2024, “Miracle Music.” The concert will take place on January 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Amarillo Botanical Garden.
Amarillo Symphony Music Director George Jackson will lead the Amarillo Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, with principal violinist Rossitza Jekova-Goza of the Harrington String Quartet and flutist Helen Blackburn of the West Texas A&M University School of Music as well as flautist Melissa Cardenas on January 13. event. Repertoire includes Christopher Theofanidis, Visions & Miracles for String Orchestra; JS Bach, Brandenburg Concerto No. 4; Mahler, Adagietto from Symphony No. 5; and Haydn, Symphony No. 96 “Miracle”.
Then the community can help the Amarillo Symphony celebrate its centennial and its symphony musicians with “Bach to Bartók.” The concerts are scheduled to take place at 7:30 p.m. on January 19 and 20 at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts.
International presenting artist Mahan Esfahani will perform Bach's Concerto in D minor on harpsichord, and musicians from the Amarillo Symphony will perform Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra under the direction of George Jackson. Other parts of the repertoire include the overture to Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.”

Exhibit Honoring 100 Years of Texas State Parks Comes to PPHM
CANYON — In honor of the centennial celebration of Texas State Parks, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon will present a new traveling art exhibit through February 18, 2024.
The Art of Texas State Parks is a survey of the visual arts of state parks featuring more than 30 parks by some of Texas' best artists. In addition to the traveling exhibit, the exhibit also includes a commemorative book published by Texas A&M Press. Proceeds from book sales and art sales through Foltz Fine Art in Houston will be donated to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation to benefit Texas State Parks at the conclusion of the exhibition .
In anticipation of the 2023 Centennial Celebration of Texas State Parks, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation collaborated with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment at Texas State University and the Bullock Texas State History Museum to showcase The Art of Texas State Parks. Thirty notable Texas artists were commissioned to create works celebrating Texas parks. PPHM was chosen as a major stop for this traveling exhibit because it is partnered with and located near Palo Duro Canyon, the most visited state park.

Bert Kreischer will perform January 21 at the Amarillo Civic Center
