‘Battlestar Galactica’ Reboot: ‘The Sinner’ Creator to Serve as Showrunner | Entertainment

More than four years after science fiction fans learned that a new version of Battlestar Galactica was in development at Peacockthe project has some new talent attached.

Derek Simondscreator of UNITED STATESIt is The fishermanwill serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner of the update Battlestar Galacticaaccording to Deadline.

Simonds' other writing credits include the television series The Astronaut Wives Club And When we get upand he served as executive producer of the 2017 film Call me by your name.

The new version of Battlestar Galactica is also produced by Sam Esmail and Chad Hamilton, through their Esmail Corp banner, with the support of Universal Content Productions.

Esmail said Deadline in 2022 that he and his colleagues were “working” on the new BSG. “I actually just read a great preview, and it's in great shape. Because the strike is now over… we are getting back to developing it.”

THE original Battlestar Galacticacreated by Glen A. Larson, debuted on ABC in 1978 and played Richard Hatch as Captain Apollo, Dirk Benoit as Lieutenant Starbuck, and Lorne Greene as Commander Adama. In the midst of a war against Cylon robots, these characters were three of the last human survivors to venture out in search of a mythical planet called Earth. The series lasted one season and spawned a 10-episode spin-off titled Galactic 1980 two years later.

In 2003, sci-fi channel present another version of Battlestar Galacticaa mini-series developed by Ronald D. Moore and featuring Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Tricia HelferAnd Grace Byk. This miniseries turned into a full-fledged series which gave birth to a spin-offtwo TV films and several web series.

As with other versions of the space opera, screenwriter Simon Kinberg has signed on the dotted line to write and produce a Battlestar Galactica film for Universal in 2020, as The Hollywood Reporter announced at the time.

Kinberg said Collider in 2022 that there was “synergy” and “constant communication” between his project and Esmail's TV show. “We became close and had some great times together, and there will be, for lack of a better phrase, and it's an overused phrase, a shared universe,” he added.
