Well, it's certainly an interesting way to launch a new set of wireless earbuds. Bose announced today that it has teamed up with fashion and lifestyle brand Kith to launch its new product: the Ultra open earphones. The news follows a leak at CES which revealed the rather unique design, a set of headphones that clip over your ears and leave the ear canal open to let in outside noise. Details are scarce in terms of key specifications, but here's what the company revealed in the announcement.
Bose describes the Ultra Open Earbuds as “an innovative cuff-like design with smooth, polished edges and a stunning finish.” From its previous “open” model, these headphones attach to the side of your ears instead of being secured with an over-ear hook. Bose says this makes the headphones more of a fashion accessory than an “audio wearable,” which explains the collaboration. The company also says you can safely wear them with a hat, glasses, or jewelry because they sit further in your ear. It also touts increased comfort and “all-day wear,” since you don’t have to choose between connecting to your surroundings or listening to audio content.
Detailed specs are scarce at the moment, but Kith has revealed a few things on its website. The fashion company further describes the model as having “a light-as-air handle” and “a flexible joint” for easy on and off. You can expect seven and a half hours of gameplay with Bose Immersive Audio for spatial sound and “an additional suite of cutting-edge technologies.” The iconic Bose branding has been replaced with a Kith logo in the same lettering style on the earbuds and charging case. Bose says this is its first partnership with a fashion brand, and it's worth noting that the company is letting a collaboration reveal an entirely new product rather than a limited-edition version of an existing product.
The Bose Ultra Open Earbuds will be available for $300 on January 22 on Kith.com and in select Kith stores “in extremely limited quantities.” I assume the company will release a proper version with its own branding soon, but there's no mention of that in today's announcement.
