How can I watch the Golden Globes?
The Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast on the CBS network in the United States and also worldwide on Paramount+.
The ceremony begins at 01:00 GMT and usually lasts between three and four hours.
It is broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
Who is nominated this year?
Barbie, Greta Gerwig's big screen adaptation of Plastic Life leads the charge at the Globes with nine nominations.
However, three of these nominations belong to the same category. Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa and Ryan Gosling have all praised the songs they contribute to the film's soundtrack.
Barbie grossed $1.44 billion (£1.14 million) at the worldwide box office and was memorably released on the same day as Oppenheimerwhich cost $953 million (£755 million) and has eight nominations.
Christopher Nolan's biopic about nuclear bomb inventor J Robert Oppenheimer couldn't have had a more different tone, but audiences flocked to see both films over the summer.
There are seven nominations for the Martin Scorsese film Killers of the Flower Moon, which is about members of an Osage tribe who were brutally murdered in the 1920s as white settlers attempted to move onto their land, fueled by greed for oil.
Poor things is also nominated in seven categories. In the adaptation of the novel of the same name by Yorgos Lanthimos, Emma Stone plays a baby whose brain has been transplanted into the body of an adult woman and embarks on an adventure of self-discovery across the world.
Celine Song's first film Past lives has five candidates. The story follows a woman living in the United States who reconnects with the man who was her best friend at school while growing up in South Korea.
There are four nominations each for the Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro, legal drama Anatomy of a fall And May December, about an actress who spends time with the real-life subject of her next film, a woman who was at the center of a tabloid scandal.
Who hosts the Golden Globes?
This year's ceremony will be hosted by American comedian and actor Jo Koy.
Although he's not a big name in the UK, the 52-year-old has previously made specials for Comedy Central and Netflix. His acting credits include Haunted Mansion and Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens.
In a statement, Koy said: “I have performed on many stages around the world during my career, but this one is going to be very special.
“I'm so excited to host…It's that moment where I can make my Filipino family proud. Mahal Kita (on Google)!”
We Googled it, and Mahal Kita is a Filipino phrase that means “I love you.”
What are the new categories?
Eight of the year's highest-earning, most acclaimed or most-watched films are nominated in the new filmmaking and box office category.
It's partly an attempt to ensure recognition for box office hits like Barbie and Oppenheimer, but it's also a way for the Globes to introduce different types of films and invite more celebrities to ceremony.
Taylor Swift is nominated for her concert film The Eras Tour. Mainstream films that don't typically appear during awards season are also being recognized, with nominations for the latest John Wick films, Mission: Impossible and Guardians of the Galaxy.
The other new category is best comedian on television. The nominees are Ricky Gervais, Trevor Noah, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman and Wanda Sykes.
Are the Globes still controversial?
The organization behind the Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), sparked controversy in 2021 due to allegations of corruption and a lack of diversity within its electoral body.
The 2022 ceremony has been significantly reduced as the Globes got their house in order. The number of members of the voting body went from around 90 to 300 over the next three years and is now significantly more diverse.
The HFPA disbanded following the controversy and the event was sold to Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions.
Questions remained over whether the Globes would be allowed to return to the Hollywood fold, but stars overwhelmingly returned to the ceremony in 2023 while a rumored boycott failed to materialize.
But the enlargement of the limb body came with its own problems – some limbs threatened to abstain from voting after finding out they weren't invited to this year's ceremony.
Why are the Golden Globes important?
The Golden Globes are traditionally a lighter event than most other ceremonies during the film awards season.
Taking place in the first week of January, celebrity guests are usually in good spirits, fresh from their Christmas break and ready to mingle over a few drinks.
In contrast, the Bafta Film Awards and Oscars are much more formal events – and the prizes are more prestigious.
But a Golden Globes win can add significant momentum to an awards campaign, with winners getting the chance to deliver an enthusiastic acceptance speech on television at a time when Oscar voters are considering their own nominations.
There is a much better chance of being nominated for the Golden Globes than of being nominated for the Oscars. There are 20 spots available in the film acting categories overall at the Oscars, compared to 36 at the Globes.
