“Avatar: The Way of Water” is an science fiction film directed by James Cameron and produced by 20th Century Studios. It is the fifth installment in the Avatar film series and is a sequel to the 2009 film “Avatar”. The film’s plot takes place 12 years after the events of the first film and follows Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their children as they explore a new part of Pandora and meet a new cast of characters.
The film features an ensemble cast, including Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine, Stephen Lang as Miles Quaritch, Kate Winslet as Ronal, and Cliff Curtis as Tonowari. The film’s motion capture performances were completed in November 2018, and the live-action filming wrapped in March 2020, shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread production shutdowns.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” has been in development since 2010, with Cameron originally planning to release it in 2014. However, due to the complexity of the film’s underwater scenes, the release date was repeatedly pushed back. The film is currently scheduled to be released on December 16, 2022, and will be available in 3D, IMAX, and 4DX formats.
