• La Jolla Community Center kicks off winter quarter classes Collaborative peer learning with film and television industry veteran Lori Holmes leading “The Mythology of the American West,” a four-part discussion series on iconic cinematic Westerns. The sessions, 4 to 5:15 p.m. Tuesday at 6811 La Jolla Blvd., will cover “Stagecoach” on Jan. 16, “The Searchers” on Jan. 23, “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” on Jan. 23. 30 and “Unforgiven” on February 6. • La Jolla Music Society renews its Changemaker lecture series with an adventurer Peter Hillary, son of Sir Edmund Hillary, who made the first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. Peter Hillary has participated in 50 mountaineering expeditions around the world, including five to Mount Everest and the other six highest peaks in the world. He was the first second-generation mountaineer to reach the summit of Everest. He will talk about his adventures, accompanied by photos and videos, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 18, in the Baker-Baum Concert Hall at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, 7600 Fay Ave. $23-48. It will also highlight adventurous works from several eras performed by the seven members of the NOISE ensemble.
