Dakota Johnson explained what it's like to be in a blended family during an interview with Hustle.
“I grew up in a very large family and I believe in the saying “Blood is thicker than water”. The true saying is “The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb” , meaning that the bonds with the people you choose are stronger than the bonds with the people you were actually born with,” Johnson tells Bustle.
The star of “Madame Web” is the actor’s daughter Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson. Thanks to her parents' other connections, she six brothers and sisters – two by his mother and four by his father.
In the Bustle interview, Johnson said she believes a chosen family can be “just as important, if not more,” than those related by blood.
“I have four brothers and two sisters, and my two sisters are not related by blood, but they are sisters and they call each other sisters and they are always together. And my two older brothers are not related by blood .other. And they're brothers,” Johnson said.
Ultimately, they all consider each other family, regardless of blood relationship, Johnson said: “And we will always be family. It's really real.”
Johnson is also in a relationship with Coldplay frontman Chris Martinwho has two children – Apple and Moses – with his ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow.
“I love these kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart,” Johnson told Bustle, when asked if she loves being a stepmom.
Johnson isn't the only celebrity to have a blended family.
There is Nick Cannonwho fathered 12 children with six wives, and Elon Musk, who also has 10 known children from three different mothers.
Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker also have a large blended family following their marriage. They each have three children from previous relationships and welcomed their first child together in November 2023.
But stepfamilies are not only seen among celebrities – ordinary people maybe in there too. A study by the United States Census Bureau reported that nearly 4 million households in the United States included stepchildren or half-siblings.
And like Generation Z is now starting to redefine familyits meaning will continue to evolve.
