Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal to star in 'Othello' on Broadway

Denzel Washington And Jake Gyllenhaal should play in Othello on Broadway in spring 2025.

The production, which will see Washington in the title role and Gyllenhaal as Iago, will be directed by Kenny Leon, who directed this season's film. Purlie Victorious and had previously led Washington in A grape in the sun And Fences, opposite Viola Davis.

In addition to these stage credits and a long film career, Washington previously starred on Broadway in Julius Caesar, Checkmate and more recently, the 2018 revival of The iceman comes, in a large cast which also included Austin Butler. His next film credits include Gladiator 2.

Gyllenhaal has starred in three Broadway shows, including Sunday at the park with George and more recently in the 2019 production of A lifea solo monologue, associated with Tom Sturridge in Sea wall. His next film, the action thriller Relay, is set to premiere at South by Southwest on March 8.

Brian Moreland, who directs The magician this season and led The piano lesson, with Washingont's son, last season, is the main producer of the revival. Production is expected to begin at an as-yet-unnamed Shubert theater.

Shakespeare's classic tale sees Iago, a junior officer, become jealous at being overlooked for promotion. He seeks revenge on his general, Othello, who has just married Desdemona, by manipulating him into believing another reality.
