Twenty-one years (and counting) must have passed for a Horrible Friday following to come to fruition.
While visiting Andy Cohen's SiriusXM show, Lindsay Lohan has confirmed that a sequel is in the works for the iconic 2003 film – although it declined to go into detail about when it would arrive.
“Lindsay, there are rumors that a Horrible Friday continue with you and Jamie Lee Curtis could be in the works. Is there anything you can tell us about this? asked Andy Cohen.
“That's true,” Lohan replied briefly, before laughing.
Cohen then insisted on a timetable, to which Lohan said, “I won't say that right now…I don't want to say too much.” Lohan went on to confirm the news, adding, “We're both excited! I'll speak for Jamie.
Last May, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that a sequel was officially in development with a script in the works with Curtis and Lohan set to reprise their roles as Anna and Tess Coleman, respectively, after 20 years.
In an interview in early 2023 with the New York TimesCurtis also revealed that she called Disney right after she finished her press tour for End of Halloweenduring which she was questioned several times about the possibility of Horrible Friday the rest actually happens.
“Something really struck a chord,” she said. “When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, 'I feel like there's a movie to be made.'”
Lohan added: “Jamie and I are both open to that, so we're leaving that in the hands of the authorities. We would only do something that people would absolutely love.
Horrible Friday, released in 2003, was based on Mary Rodgers' 1972 novel of the same name and had already been adapted twice before Curtis and Lohan took on the roles of the mother-daughter duo. The 1976 adaptation starred Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster, and the 1995 version starred Shelley Long and Gaby Hoffman.
In October 2022, Curtis said rolling stone on why Horrible Friday continued to resonate with audiences young and old.
“Because everyone struggles with this conundrum of adulthood and youth. We all judge both sides very harshly. It’s that old adage that says, ‘Walk a mile in my shoes,’” she said. “Horrible Friday is one of those great examples where you challenge someone because they make you angry because of their limitations. And then you put yourself in their shoes and recognize that actually, all of these restrictions are there for a reason.
