Many say that Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part II is one of the best science fiction films in history, and after seeing it, it's hard to say that's hyperbole. So far, the numbers seem to bear this out.
While Rotten Tomatoes' extremely high viewership and critical ratings are excellent, the more impressive number is what it's currently doing on IMDB, where current numbers I have it at 9.0/10 after 63,000 reviews have already been counted. This represents 52% of all 10/10 ratings.
In the context of IMDB, that's a pretty astonishing number. As it stands, this places Dune: Part 2 in the top 10 of all time. Not just sci-fi movies, all movies. It's actually tied with a group of 9.0, but those others have many more reviews, making the number harder to maintain. So I count it to the eighth. The list is:
- The Shawshank Redemption – 9.3
- The Godfather – 9.2
- The Dark Knight – 9.0
- The Godfather Part 2 – 9.0
- 12 Angry Men – 9.0
- Schindler's List – 9.0
- The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – 9.0
- Dune: Part Two – 9.0
- Pulp Fiction – 8.9
- The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings – 8.9
Again, it's possible that this will diminish over time, as the most enthusiastic viewers likely watched first. IMDB is also a bit more focused on geek culture. As if The Dark Knight was the third best movie ever made? Probably not. But still, Dune Part Two is hugely impressive and is winning accolades both critically and commercially, seeking to double the first film's earnings in many categories.
It goes without saying that we envisage that Villeneuve could direct Dune: Messiah, which he wants to be the third part of the trilogy, even if the sources of the book are… a little more questionable. But the “holy war” began at the end of Dune Part 2, and I'm convinced that now everyone wants to see the conclusion come to fruition. I've seen some compare the nearly completed Dune trilogy as something akin to the original Star Wars trilogy as a force of nature. I'm not one hundred percent sure we're there yet (the first movie really didn't garner that much devotion), but I can't rule it out, and yes, it's definitely the one of the best science fiction films. movies never made, no matter how you want to change the order.
As for the IMDB list, we'll see how it develops over time, but even as a starting point, it's extremely impressive and well-deserved.
