Shakeup of NFL Today on CBS could be coming

For those of us who fell in love with professional football in the 1970s, The NFL today on CBS, it was a date. And for good reason. Beyond articles that made it into the local newspaper (usually about the home team), there wasn't much information or discussion about the games that would be played each Sunday.

These days, Sunday morning/afternoon pregame shows are more prevalent — and frankly far less relevant — than they were in the '70s. In an effort to stand out among a crowded landscape content, The NFL today could envisage a new tomorrow.

As Andrew Marchand explains New York PostA a reshuffle could happen. The contracts of host James Brown and analysts Boomer Esiason, Bill Cowher and Phil Simms expire. Only Nate Burleson (who, as Marchand notes, could become the show's new host) is under contract to return, with JJ Watt part-time.

Simms tells Marchand that no matter what happens, he won't stop.

“I’ll never get out of this,” Simms told Marchand. “I don’t know what I’ll do if I don’t go back to CBS. But I will definitely continue to work with or in the NFL – somewhere, somehow, whatever it takes. I'm just not going to say, “OK, I'm done.” ” I am retired.'”

Whether it finishes between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. ET on CBS remains to be seen. At 68 years old, Simms still has many years to contribute his knowledge and insight to the game he excelled at.
