Shakira has been open about how “tough” life has been since she broke up with Gerard Piqué.
She said on the “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Friday night, “I’ve had a very tough year after my split, and recording this song [“Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53”] has been very essential to me. It has served as a constructive outlet for my feelings.
The song’s debut made Shakira, 46, feel as though other women may identify with her experience with her ex.
She continued, “I honestly felt like I don’t even have fans out there. “I have a sisterhood of women who have experienced the same things as I have, who think the way I think, who feel the way I feel, and who had to put up with so much garbage the way I had to,” she said.
And while I did create the song for myself, I also believe that it was intended for the many other women who needed a platform and a voice to speak for them in a variety of contexts.
The 36-year-old Piqué and the three-time Grammy winner announced their breakup in a joint statement in June.
The statement, which was sent by Shakira’s PR company, said, “We regret to confirm that we are splitting. “We ask that you respect our privacy because the safety of our children is our top responsibility. Thank you for your patience.
Shakira apparently discovered Piqué was having an affair when she observed her jam was always going missing and neither he nor their children were consuming the fruit spread.
Since then, Clara Chia Marti, Piqué’s new girlfriend, has made public appearances. In January, the pair posted a selfie of themselves having lunch outside to Instagram, making their relationship public.
On the set of her song “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” Shakira and Piqué first connected in 2010. The couple officially announced their relationship the following year by posting a photo of themselves on Instagram with the former athlete’s arms around the singer.
The former couple has two sons: Sasha, age 8, and Milan, age 10.
