Tesla has reduced the range estimates for two Model Y vehicles, the Model Y Long Range and the Model Y Performance, by six percent. This brings the Model Y Long Range's range down to 310 miles from 330 miles and the Model Y Performance's range to 285 miles from 303 miles. There's no official reason why Tesla lowered range estimates, but it's long been an open secret in the industry that the company tends to exaggerate these measurements. In fact, South Korea precisely for this reason. There have also been accusations that to cancel or minimize scope-related service complaints.
In other words, the company likely made this decision so that its range estimates more accurately reflect reality and not wishful thinking. It's not that the old estimates were outright lies. The range calculations simply assumed perfect weather conditions with a perfect driver operating the vehicle at maximum efficiency. In the real world, this is very rarely the case.
The EPA performs many of these tests and recognizes that impeccable driving conditions will very rarely match real-world variables. To this end, the agency with estimates of increase or decrease range after performing their own tests. Many manufacturers voluntarily choose to reduce the range estimate to better meet the driver's expectations. It seems Tesla has gone the other way.
