On March 21, 2023, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck northern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border[1]
The tremors were felt across much of Pakistan and as far away as India’s capital, New Delhi.
At least nine people were killed in northwestern Pakistan when roofs collapsed during the quake.
Dozens of others were injured in the quake, which was centred in Afghanistan and also felt in bordering Tajikistan.
In Pakistan, more than 100 people were confirmed injured.
The region is prone to violent seismic upheavals. A magnitude 7.6 quake in 2005 killed thousands of people in Pakistan and Kashmir.
Last year, a 6.1 magnitude quake struck southeastern Afghanistan
Earthquakes are caused by the movement of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface. When two plates rub against each other, they create friction that can cause an earthquake
It is important for people living in areas prone to earthquakes to be prepared for such events. This includes having an emergency kit with food, water, and medical supplies on hand at all times. It is also important to have a plan for what to do during an earthquake, such as finding a safe place to take cover until the shaking stops.
