Images: Remade Midtown building to open golf, entertainment concept

An indoor golf and entertainment concept described as the first of its kind in Georgia is expected to soon emerge in the redone annex of an iconic Midtown building.

Five-iron golf plans to open its first location in the Southeast this month, near the base of the renamed 1980s skyscraper Tower Square few years ago.

The 675 West Peachtree St. location is part of the 80,000-square-foot annex next to the office tower, located next to Midtown's Fox Theater.

Five Iron Golf announced plans to open on the plaza level near West Peachtree Street, surrounded by a forest of newer apartment buildings and hundreds of thousands of square feet of high-end office space in new towers, in fall 2022.

The Midtown location marks the Manhattan-based brand's 23rd location in the United States, following others in Detroit, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Indianapolis, as well as three more recent openings in New York and one in Boston.

The concept's main draw in Atlanta will be 13 custom Roadman golf simulators – allowing play to be simulated on nearly 200 famous courses and “tour-level technology and multiple high-speed cameras to capture every angle of the golf swing” during “Atlanta's unpredictable winters” – in more than a full meal and beverage menu, according to an announcement Wednesday.

Other features will include bag storage and locker rooms – with real showers and towel service – in addition to memberships and what is described as the largest indoor league in the country, as well as space for events private. For non-golfers, classic games such as billiards, air hockey and shuffleboard will be offered, as well as multi-sport simulators for soccer, dodgeball and bowling.

Murals created by a local artist Asek are meant to add a hip urban touch alongside modern living room furniture and neon lighting, according to company representatives.

Five Iron Golf Atlanta was originally scheduled to open in 16,000 square feet in mid-2023. (For context, Puttshack's first US location (at the Interlock District on Howell Mill Road — another golf-centric party concept — spans about 25,000 square feet, with four tech-focused mini-golf courses.) No exact opening date has been specified.

Formerly known as AT&T Midtown Center I, BellSouth Center and Southern Bell Center, Tower Square is a 47-story building next door which opened in 1981, covering 1.4 million square feet. That makes it not only the largest building in Atlanta by square footage, but also the largest in the southern United States, according to Avison Young Atlanta Agency Leasing Group, the commercial real estate company contracted in 2022 to fill it.
