After dominating Group B to open its campaign at the 2024 World Juniors, the American team embarks on its next challenge.
The Americans will face Latvia, the fourth team in Group A, in the quarterfinals Tuesday morning.
The U.S. team capped an undefeated preliminary round by beating Slovakia 10-2 on Sunday. Michigan star Rutger McGroarty scored a hat trick to punctuate the attack after a slow start to the tournament. After overcoming an illness, Red Wings prospect Trey Augustine shined between the pipes with 38 saves.
The Americans also picked up wins over Norway and Switzerland in the preliminary round, as well as an overtime win over Czechia. The American team relies on a powerful attack, as it has 29 goals, a tournament high.
Latvia advanced to the quarterfinals despite a 1-3 record in the preliminary round. She finished on three points, tied with Germany, but a victory against the Germans propelled Latvia to the next round.
Team USA is 4-0 against Latvia, including a 5-2 victory in the preliminary round last year. The Americans have dominated Latvia, 35-6, all-time.
