Chinese hackers have been hiding in US critical infrastructure for at least five years, CNN reported Wednesday
FBI and Department of Justice officials has already issued a court order to update software that could succumb to Chinese hacking. The effort aimed to combat Chinese hacking by remotely disabling certain affected systems. According to the department, he was able to remove code from hundreds of Internet routers that could have let in Chinese hackers.
The next report reveals how long this has been going on and how serious a potential cyberattack could be. It details the techniques used by hackers, while providing advice to companies behind critical infrastructure systems on how to detect Chinese hackers in their systems. There are so far no signs in the report that hackers have acted maliciously against U.S. infrastructure.
The hackers began by breaking into computer systems and from there worked their way to larger technologies behind America's infrastructure. They also forced security cameras at some facilities and, in another case, gained access to water treatment plants, the report said.
Last week, FBI Director Christopher Wray warned Congress that Chinese hackers were preparing to wreak havoc on U.S. critical infrastructure systems. “Cyber threats to our critical infrastructure represent real threats to our physical security,” he told the audience.
