Supporters and families filled the Dunkirk city courthouse on Monday for the inauguration of new Mayor Kate Wdowiasz and members of the municipal council.
The swearing-in took place during the Common Council's first regular meeting of 2024. Former General Councilor David Damico led the start of the meeting, then quietly exited after November General Councilor-elect Nick Weiser took the oath. . Weiser took his place.
Also sworn in were Parish Representatives Natalie Luczkowiak, Abigail Yerico, James Stoyle and Nancy Nichols. All five council members were sworn in at the same time on the same Bible, with the group looking much like a football squad.
The new council ratified all of Wdowiasz's ministerial choices. Lillian Divine will return as city clerk, while Ellen Luczkowiak will take over as fiscal affairs manager and Elliot Raimondo will be the new city attorney. Randy Woodbury remains director of the Department of Public Works and Vince DeJoy remains director of planning and development.
Wdowiasz delivered an inaugural speech. “I wanted to become mayor because I truly believe that this community has the tools, the knowledge, the desire, the ability and the will to make Dunkirk great.” she says. “This administration will be centered on the concept of 'we': we are all in this together.”

She later said she wanted an administration that could help push Dunkirk away. “reactive practices”. Wdowiasz also added that she looks forward to working with Fredonia on water issues.
Marencia Bohn sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” And “God bless America.”
Rev. Dan Walsh offered an opening prayer and a closing blessing. “Teach them to serve the common good” he asked God for city officials.
